OPINION

Is there anything that Virgil van Dijk can’t do? The big Dutchman has been one of the most impressive and transformative transfers of the Premier League era, and has established himself as a genuine world class talent since arriving at Liverpool from Southampton. Add to that the small matter of a Champions League winner’s medal, not to mention a run of imperious displays for the Netherlands, and the 27-year-old is one of the hottest properties in world football right now. And it would appear that he has talents and capabilities that we are only just scratching the surface of. According to a stat posted by reliable journalist Dave O’Connell on Twitter, the Liverpool defender recorded a sprint speed of 34.5 KM/H in Europe this season, the fastest in the Champions League. When you think about some of the competition he will have had in that particular category, that is truly special. You wouldn’t think of Van Dijk as a speedster, but that is largely because of how good at his job he is. Where is the need to sprint around like a lunatic when you read the game so well that you are always three steps ahead of the game? It’s pleasing to know, however, that when he does have to shift, the Dutchman can really get moving.
