Liverpool should swoop for Asensio

Liverpool don’t really need to invest too much this summer.

As European champions, and as the greatest runners-up the Premier League has ever seen, there’s not an awful lot that the club can do to improve on last season.

Improve they can, however, and improve they must if they are to stand any chance of catching Manchester City in their quest for a first league title in three decades next time around.

You can’t help feeling that the best approach to take in that recruitment process is one or two quality acquisitions, rather than a scattergun approach that has characterised previous summers.

And as far as one-off quality additions go, you wouldn’t get much better than Real Madrid midfielder Marco Asensio.

The double Champions League winner has seen his progress stall somewhat in the Spanish capital, and the Reds have been linked with a move for him before, as reported by Spanish outlet OK Diario.

And now it would appear that Real would be willing to consider letting him leave the club this summer.

According to Spanish journalist Mario Torrejón, Madrid are looking to conduct something of a clear out this summer.

Speaking on Spanish radio show El Lager, as quoted by AS, he said: “The whole world knows that Lucas Vazquez and Bale are on the market and could leave at any moment, and if good offers arrive, Isco and Asensio could be negotiated over.

“That’s not to say they will all good, not at all, but they won’t all stay.

“At least half of those four player will leave.”

The 23-year-old has a £442 million release written into his contract, but would not have to come anywhere close to that to tempt Madrid into selling.

On the face of it, Liverpool’s squad is pretty much the finished article, but when a player of Asensio’s quality and potential becomes available, you have to move.
