Virgil van Dijk is worth at least £150 million, according to talkSPORT pundit Jason Cundy.

The Dutchman signed for the Reds from Southampton last January in a deal worth around £75 million, but Cundy is of the opinion that he has doubled that value.

Speaking on talkSPORT, he said: “Virgil van Dijk went for £75 million last year, he is probably worth double that now.

“If Liverpool had to sell, and they don’t have to, if somebody came in with £150 million, that might not even get him.”

OPINION

It’s hard to argue with Cundy on this one. Without a doubt, the market is ridiculously inflated, and £150 million on any player would have been a laughable prospect five years ago. We’re through the looking glass now though, and if Manchester United are willing to pay £50 million for a player like Aaron Wan-Bissaka, a promising defender with just one full top flight season behind him, then why wouldn’t van Dijk be worth three times that amount? It is difficult to think of a more transformative signing than his in recent Premier League history. He wasn’t the only factor in Liverpool’s title push last year, but his presence certainly helped to sure up a backline that had looked far too rickety for far too long. Is he the best defender in the world? Kopites would say so, and his average of 5.2 clearances and pass accuracy of 89.8% last season [Whoscored] shows a player who can dictate games form the heart of defence. That is a rare talent, and one that, in today’s market, is worth a shedload.
