Adrian Durham took a dig at Liverpool duo Xherdan Shaqiri and Divock Origi over their goalscoring records when comparing them to Manchester City pair Leroy Sane and Riyhad Mahrez.

The talkSPORT broadcaster ended up defending the Manchester City duo , via talkSPORT , after he suggested the Reds needed to sign players capable of covering Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino.

Durham’s remarks saw a neutral football fan, Gary Taylor, disagree and he opted to claim that Mahrez and Sane were just tippy-tappy players, whereas Origi and Shaqiri both scored goals.

“Both are tippy tippy players, both like to take themselves on with clever tricks. Origi and Shaqiri score goals….Origi the ultimate goal,” wrote the fan.

Durham responded to claim Origi and Shaqiri’s goalscoring records weren’t great before saying that the supporter was wrong to just label Mahrez and Sane as tippy-tappy players as that wasn’t a proper analysis

“They’re not goalscorers tho, look at their records. Dismissing the city players as tippy tappy isn’t analysis. Stones has been there the last two seasons. Two title medals,” wrote the broadcaster, via his verified Twitter account.

OPINION

Durham aired his views on Liverpool during his radio show and the one thing you can guarantee with the broadcaster is that he isn’t one to easily change his mind. Once the broadcaster seemed to question Origi and Shaqiri’s records, by suggesting the Reds needed to make signings, he wasn’t going to back down. However, the Reds duo’s recent records don’t really back up Durham’s point. Origi and Shaqiri were both used sparingly by Jurgen Klopp in their recent campaign, but when they were on the pitch, they seized their chances. The Belgian attacker scored seven times in his 2018/19 campaign and averaged a goal every 96 minutes. In fact, Origi was quite formidable in front of goal when you consider 77% of his 13 shots hit the target (Source: BBC). He also sounds amazing, when you consider that he only attempted 13 shots, yet scored seven times. As for Shaqiri, he also had a decent record in front of goal last season as he scored six goals, which meant he averaged a goal every 156 minutes (Source: BBC). If the pair played more, then based on their numbers they would score more as it’s simply a case of them being given a chance.
