Jurgen Klopp has joked that Juventus boss Maurizio Sarri could table a bid to sign Adam Lallana after the Liverpool midfielder played in a “Jorginho role” in the 3-1 friendly win against Bradford on Sunday.

Lallana, 31, was utilised as a defensive midfielder in the first-half against the League One club, but Klopp’s experiment attracted criticism from some fans who were unhappy with the ex-Southampton player’s display.

After the match, Klopp admitted that it was an experiment to see how Lallana would do in a deeper-lying midfield role.

And clearly the German was impressed with what he saw as he joked that Juve boss Sarri could be interested in the England international.

“Adam is the kind of player he can play that and he enjoys this ‘Jorginho’ role – I hope Maurizio Sarri doesn’t see the games or he will make an offer,” Klopp said, as quoted by Sky Sports.

“It is about getting Adam rhythm, bringing him in early and doing things he is naturally good at – small spaces, passing the ball, and then from time-to-time offering the runs in behind as well and together with Milly (Milner) that is possible. For us, it is another option.

“He needs a bit of luck, as we all do in life. We have to come through without injuries, that would be cool, and then we have a couple of new players, I would say, this season.”

OPINION

Lallana only played for 45 minutes in that defensive midfield role and although he failed to impress some supporters on Twitter, it is the opinion of Klopp and his coaches that matter the most. Liverpool are European champions because they have one of the best managers in the world in Klopp. If fans aren’t happy with Lallana after just 45 minutes of pre-season football, they need to realise that this was an experiment and Klopp might see that it didn’t work out as hoped. Klopp could also see it as a success, and his joke about Sarri and Jorginho may suggest that he was happy with what he saw from Lallana. Liverpool have a good number of options in their midfield and Lallana, after several injury issues and improved form by his team-mates, is perhaps further down the pecking order than he would like. Although he is in the last year of his contract, it looks like he is set to stay at Anfield and fight to earn a new deal before his current agreement expires in a years time.
