Liverpool are hoping to beat the likes of Manchester United and Tottenham to the signature of teenage Northern Irishman Charlie Allen, according to the Belfast Telegraph.

The 15-year-old midfielder currently plays for Linfield, and has been named in his club’s squad for the Champions League qualifier against Rosenborg on Wednesday night. If he features, he will become the youngest British player in the tournament ever.

Manchester City, Leicester City, Leeds United Celtic, Rangers and Aberdeen are also understood to be monitoring Allen’s development.

OPINION

You only have to take one look at the quality of club pursuing Allen to realise thet he could be the real deal. The youngster may have only made one appearance for Linfield’s senior side, coming in the final game of their campoahn last season, but the fact that he is already involved again this term shows that he is no flash in the pan. Already scoring goals for Northern Ireland’s youth setup, as reported by Linfield’s official website, he is clearly on a good path and a high trajectory. To be playing senior football at any level is an achievement for somebody so young, but the fact that he could feature in the Champions League before his 16th birthday is truly a sign of just how special Allen can go on to be. Interest is high, and the Reds will have to beat off a whole host of clubs to snap him up, but he could be well worth that effort in a couple of years’ time.
