Liverpool have taken veteran goalkeeper Andy Lonergan on their US preseason tour, according to the Echo

The 35-year-old stopper is currently without a club having left Middlesbrough earlier this month, and is expected to provide cover in training sessions, with Simon Mignolet the only senior keeper to have travelled for the Reds.

Alisson Becker is on a break after winning the Copa America, Caoimhin Kelleher is recovering from surgery on a broken wrist, Vitezslav Jaros has an elbow ligament strain, and Kamil Grabara is yet to report back from youth international duty.

It is not expected that the 6’4″ veteran [Transfermarkt] will sign a contract with the Reds.

OPINION

On the face of it, we may have a new contender for strangest story of the summer, but when you stop to think about it, this makes a lot of sense. The Reds have a whole host of goalkeeping options, but right now, only Mignolet is available. It would be lunacy to go and spend actual money on a goalkeeper, only for them to end up being fourth of fifth in the pecking order, and so this solution, taking Lonergan along as an extra body in training, is a really decent idea. He is without a club, but also has a ridiculous amount for experience, having played for just about any side you could care to mention in English football. You would hope that he will be a good, level head to have around the camp, and if Jurgen Klopp believes in him, then that’s all that really matters.
