Liverpool transfer target Kai Havertz has spoken out about what’s next for him in his already-glittering footballing career.

German publication Bild reported earlier this week that the Reds are one of the teams who are monitoring the 20-year-old, along with Bayern Munich and Barcelona, with the player rated at £89.8million.

Now, the Bayer Leverkusen midfielder has spoken out: “I am honest, at some point the next step must come for me,” he told the same publication, via Bavarian Football Works. “But I’m not going to worry about when exactly that will happen. What counts now is Bayer Leverkusen. We still have a lot to do.

“Leverkusen very quickly signaled that they wanted to keep me. That’s why it wasn’t an issue for me. Now I’m starting my tenth year here, maybe we can make it a golden one for the club. What will happen afterwards has not yet been decided. There is no club where I have already signed.

“I really don’t know yet whether FC Bayern is the next and right step for me. I also don’t know whether foreign countries would not be more suitable for me. I really don’t think too much about it at the moment.”

OPINION

Well, it’s always interesting to hear from young prospects about what they think is the right next step for them. It appears, from what Havertz is saying, that he isn’t sure whether Bayern Munich are the best fit for him moving forward. That’s encouraging for Liverpool, there’s no doubt about that, because German players tend to almost always favour a move to the Allianz Arena over everything else. The Leverkusen starlet, though, doesn’t seem so sure. That’s good news for the Reds, where the lure of working with Jurgen Klopp – and their status as European champions – could help them budge Barcelona out of the way. Another thing that helps them is that Havertz appears to be committed to Lverkusen for another season. That works for Liverpool because there’s no way they’re going to be spending nearly £90million on a player this summer. Is Havertz a good fit, though? The statistics leave that open to debate. As per WhoScored.com, he scored 17 goals last season but grabbed only three assists, while averaging 2.6 shots per game but only 1 key pass per game. What do the Reds need? A creative midfielder. However, Havertz would appear to be merely a goalscoring midfielder.
