Liverpool have no plans to let Simon Mignolet leave Anfield this summer, according to the Liverpool Echo.

The newspaper claims that the 31-year-old is expected to stay put on Merseyside to serve as back-up for number one goalkeeper Alisson.

However it is understood that the situation could change if Liverpool are “offered extraordinary terms” for the Belgium international and they could go into the market for a new shot-stopper if that is the case.

OPINION

It shouldn’t take an “extraordinary” offer for Liverpool to cash in. Sure, Jurgen Klopp wants to keep together a squad that won the Champions League title last season and finished second in the Premier League, but there are better goalkeepers out there than Mignolet. Last season, the ex-Sunderland shot-stopper made just two appearances. He played in the Carabao Cup and FA Cup and suffered defeat on both occasions against Premier League opposition. Mignolet has been error-prone during his time at Liverpool and if Alisson was to get suspended or injured next term, there will no doubt be fans who are worried about the Belgian coming in. Mignolet has two years left on his contract and could still fetch a half-decent fee. If something reasonable comes along and Klopp can find a replacement without spending too much money, then he should definitely consider it. The 6ft 4 [transfermarkt] Belgian has been a good servant for Liverpool but if the Reds want to improve, there’s no room for sentiment.
