Nicol urges double swoop

Steve Nicol has urge Liverpool to move for a new centre back and a goalscoring midfielder in the current transfer window.

The Reds have only signed 17-year-old defender Sepp van den Berg this summer, and are showing no real signs of making any drastic moves in the market.

But Nicol has identified the two positions they need to strengthen to help them challenge for the title next season.

Speaking on ESPN, as quoted by the Express, he said: “I think Liverpool need to strengthen.

“I think they need to strengthen at centre-back and they need to figure out a way of getting goals from the middle of the park.

“That will make the difference.”

OPINION

You can understand Nicol’s viewpoint, and ordinarily you might be inclined to agree with him, but the two positions he has mentioned here are the exact two that will be automatically strengthened by players returning from injury. Joe Gomez and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain both missed large spells of last season through injury, but both are back up and running now, and you would expect them to make a really decent impact on the Reds’ squad. The Ox was just starting to find himself on Merseyside prior to the horrendous knock that ruled him out for much of last term, while Gomez looked every inch the long term partner to Virgil van Dijk before he was ruled out. Liverpool will need to strengthen if they are to challenge Manchester City for the title next term, but the tools they need might already be at their disposal. The Reds don’t have to spend big to improve this summer.
