Liverpool attacker Divock Origi is considering an offer of a new contract while he’s on holiday, according to the Liverpool Echo.

The newspaper claims that the Belgian international is away from Merseyside recovering from a season in which he played a key role in the Reds’ Champions League triumph.

Positive discussions have been held between the club and Origi’s representatives, and Jurgen Klopp wants to keep the 24-year-old regardless of whether he puts pen to paper on a new deal or not.

Origi currently has just a year left on his contract and there is interest from the likes of Real Betis. However, Liverpool have handed him fresh terms and he is now mulling his decision over while on holiday.

OPINION

It was certainly the right decision from Liverpool to offer Origi a new deal considering what he did for the club over the second half of last season. He popped up with numerous vital goals for Klopp’s team, keeping the Reds’ Premier League title bid going until the final game of the campaign and helping fire them to a sixth European Cup success. With the player having just 12 months left on his current contract you obviously want him to renew so that he’s tied down and can’t leave for free, but in this case Liverpool are clearly ready to lose Origi for nothing in a year’s time if he doesn’t decide to sign fresh terms. That makes sense, though, because of what an important cog in the Liverpool machine the Belgian is. He is crucial as the first port of call if one of the team’s fearsome front three go down injured or gets suspended. All the Reds faithful can do now, then, is hope that he has some time to think about it on holiday and decides to remain where he is.
