Micky Quinn shared that he believes Liverpool could beat Manchester City to the Premier League title in the 2019/20 campaign.

talkSPORT host Max Rushden stated that he thought the race for the Premier League title looked like being between the Reds and Man City once again, and asked Quinn whether Jurgen Klopp’s side could end up winning the league this time around.

Quinn replied by saying he was confident the Reds had a chance of winning the Premier League, even if they didn’t make a marquee signing this summer, as Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Joe Gomez were like new recruits.

“Yes course they can, erm I don’t know if they’re going to sign a marquee signing going into the new season but with Oxlade-Chamberlain coming back and Joe Gomez fit now, they’re almost like two new players anyway,” said Quinn on talkSPORT (17:50, Monday, July 22nd).

Darren Gough then suggested Adam Lallana was like a new signing, but Quinn responded to dismiss that idea as he pointed out the midfielder’s current status.

“And Lallana…but he’s injured again I think,” said Quinn in a downbeat tone.

OPINION

Quinn highlighting Gomez and Oxlade-Chamberlain as being two players who could potentially help the Reds go one step further in their 2019/20 campaign and win the Premier League title makes sense. The Reds finished just one point behind Manchester City in the 2018/19 season, and Gomez, as well as Oxlade-Chamberlain, missed a whole chunk of that campaign due to injury. Gomez played 16 league games, averaging a rating of 6.76 (Source: WhoScored), but an ankle injury saw him miss 20 league matches. However, the centre-back did end up playing more of a role in the Reds’ latest campaign than Oxlade-Chamberlain as the 25-year-old managed only two brief league appearances due to a knee injury. Both players ended up being fit for the end of the season, and this surely means that after a full pre-season under their belt, both will be able to play a part in the upcoming campaign. Also, it’s no surprise that Quinn dismissed Gough’s idea that Lallana could make a difference as the midfielder missed the clash with Dortmund and Sevilla after suffering a knock (Source: Liverpool Echo).
