Rangers have made an approach to sign Liverpool midfielder Herbie Kane on loan, according to Football Insider.

The reliable news outlet claims that the 20-year-old is set to spend the upcoming season out on loan after impressing during his temporary spell at Doncaster Rovers last time out.

It is understood that Steven Gerrard is hoping to use his connections at Anfield to be able to sign Kane, who has not travelled with the Liverpool squad for their pre-season tour of the USA.

Football Insider adds that Rangers are not the only team interested in signing Kane this summer though, but Gerrard is hopeful that he can convince the central midfielder to make a temporary move to Ibrox before the transfer window slams shut.

OPINION

Unlike some of the more highly-rated youngsters in the Liverpool squad, Kane has been left at home and not included in the club’s pre-season tour of the States. Surely that would mean that Jurgen Klopp does not plan to use Kane in his senior squad next season and that a loan move away from Merseyside is something that is on the cards. Joining Rangers might be a decent move for Kane if the deal comes to fruition. Ryan Kent was superb at Ibrox last term and Sheyi Ojo has settled down well north of the border after scoring against St Joseph’s in the Europa League qualifiers. Gerrard will no doubt take Kane under his wing and teach him the ropes, as well as hand him vital first-team experience. Unless a better offer comes along, it’s hard to see Liverpool, or Kane, rejecting the approach from Rangers. It could be the making of his career.
