Liverpool legend Graeme Souness has heaped praise on Liverpool’s midfielders, particularly veteran star James Milner.

The former England international has been as consistent as they come throughout his time on Merseyside, and Souness feels he and his midfield teammates will go from strength to strength moving forward.

“In James Milner, they have a quiet assassin and I don’t think I’d particularly enjoy playing against their midfield because they are on you all the time, they want to get physically involved with you – and they steamroller,” he told the Daily Mirror.

“The fact they come after you with an intensity and never leave you alone is great for Liverpool’s back four. [Georginio] Wijnaldum, Fabinho, [Jordan] Henderson, Milner do a great job for the team. More success will come for them.

OPINION

It’s interesting for Souness to come out and praise Liverpool’s midfielders, because the middle of the park is generally considered the weakest area of the pitch for Jurgen Klopp’s team. Their goalkeeper, defence and front three are all virtually faultless, so the team’s midfielders can sometimes pale in comparison. However, as Souness says, you definitely wouldn’t want to play against them. They are on you like a rash from the first whistle, pressing relentlessly and ensuring the opposition can’t get into any sort of rhythm. As Souness says, Milner is the one who really goes under the radar. He is a terrific player and one who Klopp clearly relies upon massively. He is a ‘quiet assassin’. He doesn’t talk a lot, he doesn’t get into arguments with opposition players, but he gets on with his job and does it excellently every single time. Wijnaldum, Fabinho and Henderson all compliment each other very well, but Milner’s veteran savvy is vital for Liverpool.
