Jurgen Klopp has singled out his defence as an area to improve after Liverpool’s pre-season defeat against Borussia Dortmund.

The Reds went down 3-2 to Klopp’s former side, with an error from Nathaniel Clyne in the third minute leading to the start of a sloppy day for Liverpool’s defence.

As quoted by the Liverpool Echo in his post-match press conference, Klopp said: “The goals we conceded were due to a lack of organisation around the situations. When you change your team line-ups, it’s difficult to have that organisation.”

“I still don’t like what I see but I know the reason for it. I am not over the moon when I think about our performance but l know there is a lot to come.”

Klopp used a number of different defenders, including the rarely-seen Yasser Larouci, but also stuck with some experience in Joel Matip, Clyne and Joe Gomez from the start.

The 58-year-old also had players such as Virgil Van Dijk, Dejan Lovren, and Trent Alexander-Arnold available off the bench.

OPINION

Klopp is a perfectionist, he loves to get every single detail right even in pre-season games. Although he won’t be happy with the fact that his side conceded three goals, he knows he still has time to work on shape and organisation before the new Premier League season. The German will also know that Dortmund used the majority of their strongest side whereas the Reds’ utilised players such as Larouci, who impressed massively keeping the skillful Jadon Sancho quiet for the majority of the game. Clyne most likely waved goodbye to his Liverpool career in the opening three minutes, after his mistake proved he isn’t up to scratch to maintain a spot for the Reds after his loan move to Bournemouth last season. Klopp has to step back and evaluate the situation come to the end of the USA trip, with the German mentioning he knows he will have changed his defence come to the end of pre-season.
