Andrew Robertson will return to Liverpool training this week after undergoing surgery to fix a minor hand problem.

The Reds’ full-back has returned to Melwood and will take part in training in the coming days before making the trip to the USA for fixtures against the likes of Borussia Dortmund and Napoli.

Jurgen Klopp confirmed the news on Liverpool’s official website on Saturday, saying: “He should be back in training in a couple of days. The rest is good, he could do all of the programme he had to do.”

The Scotland international underwent the surgery on his hand after being bitten by an insect which led to an infection.

Robertson is set to be closely monitored by the Reds’ coaching staff in the coming days after an outstanding season at Anfield in the previous campaign.

OPINION

This is great news for everyone involved at Liverpool. Everyone connected with the club will have expected the worst when reading that their left-sided flyer was to undergo surgery. In all aspects, the fact that a bite from an insect led to surgery just shows how bizarre the injury was, and the fact that it was on his hand means that he shouldn’t be affected too much with most sessions in pre-season. The 25-year-old was in outstanding form in all competitions last season, delivering 11 assists in the Premier League despite his defensive role. Robertson was a mainstay under Klopp and featured in 36 Premier League games as well as featuring heavily in the club’s run to their sixth Champions League success. After the release of Alberto Moreno, it was key that this surgery didn’t keep Robertson out for too long, with no senior back-up at the club in case of any injury or suspension. The best possible news was that Robertson would play a good role in pre-season, something that will allow the Scot to go into next season with the chance of performing even better for the club.
