Alan McInally raved about Liverpool duo Andy Robertson and Sadio Mane following their displays in the 2-1 win over Southampton.

The Sky Sports pundit shared that he thought the Reds duo caused the Saints all sorts of problems down the left-hand flank after Jeff Stelling asked him for his opinion on the game.

“To be fair, Mane and Robertson down that left-hand side caused them all sorts of problems,” said McInally on Sky Sports News (17:09, Saturday, August 17th).

Liverpool beat the Saints 2-1 on Saturday thanks to goals from Roberto Firmino and Mane, and currently sit top of the Premier League after two games played.

OPINION

Jurgen Klopp’s side didn’t put in a stellar performance against the Saints, with some players looking a little jaded after playing midweek against Chelsea, but at the end of the day, they got a win. It’s no surprise that McInally singled out Mane and Robertson for praise following the victory either, as they were two of the Reds liveliest players. Both tried to make things happen for the Reds down the left-flank and more often than not, them charging forward seem to cause the Saints no end of bother. Robertson and Mane both had stellar 2018/19 campaigns, and have a result set the bar of expectations high for themselves. Robertson assisted 11 goals in 35 league outings last season, averaging a rating of 7.12 (Source: WhoScored), while Mane scored 22 goals while assisting one and maintaining a rating of 7.43, in 36 league outings (Source: WhoScored). For the Reds to go for the league title once again, the pair both have to replicate their form from last season, if not better it, this season.
