Mo Salah is one of the “top five” footballers in the world, according to former Liverpool ace John Aldridge.

The Egyptian King put in a typically eye-catching performance against Arsenal on Saturday evening, costing twice in a 3-1 victory.

And Aldridge has been quick to wax lyrical about the 27-year-old.

Writing in a column for the Echo, he said: “He has to be top five in the world, he just has to be, and as a Liverpool supporter, you just cross your fingers and hope he doesn’t get injured.

“For Mo and the front three as a whole, they are so difficult to keep out the game when they are on song.

“Salah looks hungry for more and I think winning the European Cup has helped him and the whole team with that.”

OPINION

Aldridge is right, Salah is a superlative footballer. There aren’t many players in the world right now who can do what he does, and when he builds up a head of steam, he is so hard to stop. Just ask David Luiz. The Arsenal man will be having nightmares about the way that Salah left him in the lurch at Anfield, and the scariest thing about the Egyptian is that he can do it to anybody. How do you defend against that? The answer usually is that you cannot. Already this season Salah has three goals in three games in the league, and is averaging 3.3 shots per match, as per Whoscored. Add that his 1.7 key passes and 1.7 successful dribbles, and you have an all-rounder who is only likely to get better and better as he works his way into the campaign. The key will be keeping him fit and firing, but if the Reds can do that – and they’ve managed pretty well so far – they will be laughing.
