Jamies Carragher wants Liverpool to sign James Maddison from Leicester City at some point in the future, even though he admits that it will be a costly transfer for his former club.

Maddison, 22, has enjoyed a good start to the season for the Foxes after assisting his side’s equaliser in their 1-1 draw against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

The former Norwich playmaker is yet to be capped by England but is someone who is tipped to have a massive future and Carragher believes that he is someone who Liverpool should be eyeing up for a potential transfer.

“He’s the one player outside of the top-six that, with my Liverpool head on, I’d be thinking he’s one we should be looking at,” Carragher said on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football [10:49pm].

“People talk about [Philippe] Coutinho coming back – he’s going to Bayern Munich – but if you think of someone in the Premier League who you might be able to get, I think it’ll cost a lot of money but he’s certainly one I’d be looking at thinking ‘go and take that next step up’.”

OPINION

Maddison will definitely cost a lot of money. If Manchester United are spending £85million on signing Harry Maguire from Leicester then it’s surely going to cost more than that for a team like Liverpool to pry Maddison away from the King Power. He is young, impressed in his debut Premier League season last time out and is on the verge of becoming an England international in the near future. Liverpool could really do with some added creativity in their midfield and Maddison is someone who could do that. Jurgen Klopp did not want to add to his first-team squad this summer but he may well want to next year, especially with players like James Milner getting on. £55,000-a-week [Spotrac] Maddison may well be someone who is already on Michael Edwards’ list and someone who Liverpool scout a lot over the coming months. However there is a good chance that every other top-six club is also keeping close tabs on the Coventry-born playmaker.
