Liverpool Echo journalist Paul Gorst has admitted that he would be “shocked” if Curtis Jones left the club this summer.

The 6’1″ midfielder [Transfermarkt] made his senior debut for the Reds against Wolves in the FA Cup last season, but has not featured since.

He was, however, given the captain’s armband for the U23s, and did put to paper on a new deal at Anfield.

And Gorst doesn’t believe that he will be going anywhere this season.

Writing in a Q&A for the Echo (12.20), he said: “Curtis Jones was recently given the captain’s armband for the U23s after signing a new contract with the Reds.

“I’d be shocked if they allowed him to leave on loan before the close of the European transfer window.”

OPINION

Jones has certainly started the season at quite the pace, and if he can continue to perform at the level that he is, then there is no reason why he can’t add to his single senior appearance. At just 18, to be given the U23s captaincy is a massive achievement, and a real sign of not just his ability, but his maturity and temperament as well. Add to that a goal and an assist in his first three matches in the Premier League 2 this season, and it’s easy to see why the club are keen for him to stick around. Jones might not be a regular this season, but if the examples of Trent Alexander-Arnold and Rhian Brewster are anything to go by, there should be plenty of opportunity for him to work his way into the first team fold, little by little. Jurgen Klopp will be keeping a close eye on his progress, and that the moment, he’s got to be enjoying what he’s seeing.
