Darren Gough shared he was baffled by Liverpool attacker Divock Origi as he believes he doesn’t fit in at the club.

The former England cricketer revealed he was excited by Jurgen Klopp’s squad as they have their front three of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino while also having some young players capable of coming into the first team.

Gough described Origi as being the “surprise” and even reiterated that the 6’1″ tall forward (Source: Transfermarkt) doesn’t fit in and that it showed on Sunday in the defeat to Manchester City.

“That Liverpool squad does excite me, they’ve got some young players who can come in and in those three they’ve got up top…I still say Origi is the surprise, he just doesn’t fit in for me,” said Gough on talkSPORT (17:15, Monday, August 5th).

“Like when he played yesterday (Sunday v Manchester City) he just don’t fit in.”

OPINION

Gough talks about Origi like he is some sort of enigma he can’t work out, and it’s hard to see why. The 24-year-old proved himself at Anfield last season as he stepped up when his side needed him most. Origi was able to score in his limited minutes, he managed to score three goals in the league despite only playing 366 minutes, and a lot of his goals were vital to the Reds’ chances of success. For example, the 24-year-old scored against Everton in December to rescue a point, despite only being on the pitch six minutes, and kept the Reds in the Premier League title race. Origi also notably scored twice in the Champions League semi-final against Barcelona as well as the final against Tottenham to help Klopp’s side lift the cup. So why is Gough so baffled by the attacker being at Liverpool? Yes, he is not of the same mould as Salah, Firmino or Mane but that is why he is at Anfield, as he is offers something different when Plan A isn’t getting the Reds goals. As for Gough suggesting Origi’s performance against Manchester City proves his point, the Belgian only played 79 minutes and is still working towards getting 100% fit before the Reds’ league opener against Norwich.
