Herbie Kane is set to stay put at Anfield this season after Liverpool decided that the midfielder will feature in their Carabao Cup campaign, according to the Portsmouth News.

The south coast news outlet claims that League One side Portsmouth wanted to sign Kane, 20, on loan but their chances are fading due to the promise of first-team football at Liverpool over the coming months.

It is understood that the Reds had originally made the central midfielder available for another loan spell away from Merseyside but there has now been a change of heart by manager Jurgen Klopp.

OPINION

It is hard to see why Kane should be kept around just so that he might earn his first-ever senior appearance in the Carabao Cup. Either he could go on loan to League One and play a lot of football, or he could stick to Under-23s action at Anfield and maybe get on the bench in cup games. Klopp has a lot of central midfield options at his disposal and he’s only likely to use Kane if Liverpool draw a lower division side once they begin their Carabao Cup campaign. Liverpool want to win silverware and the Carabao Cup could be a good competition to target as some teams refuse to take it seriously. Playing Kane could hinder those chances if it’s against a good side. The 20-year-old made 49 appearances in all competitions on loan at Doncaster last season and is a better player for it. Surely one, or maybe two, appearances off the bench for Liverpool in the Carabao Cup isn’t going to be as good for his development as an entire loan spell away.
