Liverpool defender George Johnston has left the club to sign a permanent deal with Feyenoord.

The Reds made their official announcement via Twitter on Wednesday.

The 20-year-old centre-back captained the Kop’s U23 sided for much of last season, and has been with the club since the age of nine.

Johnston is also a Scottish U21 international, winning two caps at that level.

OPINION

There seems to be a bit of an exodus going on at Liverpool at the moment. As well as Johnston leaving on Wednesday, the Reds also announced the loan departure of fellow defender Nat Phillips, who has joined Stuttgart for the season. What that says about the quality of and the depth of player available to the Reds outside of the senior setup is seriously impressive. The fact that the club is willing to let their U23s captain, Johnston, walk away on a permanent deal should tell you a lot about how much talent they have coming through at the moment. Hopefully Johnston can kick on and have a great career on the continent. At 5’11” [Transfermarkt], he isn’t the biggest defender in the world, but he makes up for relative lack of size with an intelligence and reading of the game that is genuinely admirable. You would assume that the Dutch league, played at a slower pace on the whole and with its heavy emphasis on football purism, will suit him down to the ground, and don’t be surprised to see him challenging the first team in Rotterdam very soon.
