OPINION

You could not make this kind of thing up. When it comes to their goalkeeping situation this season, Liverpool fans would be forgiven for thinking that their side is cursed. After undisputed number one Alisson Becker picked up an injury in their Premier League opener against Norwich City last Friday, it was down to veteran Spaniard Adrian to step into the breach in midweek after having only just completed a move to Anfield from West Ham. One Super Cup final and a penalty save later, and the 32-year-old was an instant hero on Merseyside. And then he went and picked up a freakish ankle injury, as confirmed by Jurgen Klopp, and reported by Neil Jones of Goal. Inadvertently tackled by an excited fan running onto the pitch in celebration, Adrian is now looking like a doubt for the Reds’ trip to Southampton on Saturday. Through a process of elimination, that could see Klopp turn to 35-year-old Andy Lonergan out of desperation. The stopper was only brought in as an extra body for preseason training, and now stands on the cusp of a Premier League debut when most players are hanging up their boots. It’s a remarkable story, but one that will leave the Kop more than a little nervous, especially considering Lonergan picked up the lowest Whoscored rating of any player to play five or more games in the 2017/18 Championship. No pressure then, Andy.
