Simon Mignolet is close to leaving Liverpool to join Belgian side Club Brugge, according to Kristof Terreur.

The HLN journalist claimed via his personal Twitter account on Sunday night that Mignolet, 31, has jetted out to Belgium to seal his return to his home country, six years after joining the Merseyside giants.

Times journalist Paul Joyce added on his personal Twitter account that Mignolet is due to undergo a medical tomorrow [Monday] and Liverpool will now be on the hunt to sign a replacement.

Mignolet has played 204 times across all competitions for Liverpool since joining them from Sunderland in 2013 but his appearance on the bench against Manchester City on Sunday seems like it will be his final duty as a Reds player.

OPINION

Liverpool surely have to sign a new goalkeeper if Mignolet goes. Alisson Becker is obviously the number one choice for Jurgen Klopp but away from him, Mignolet is the only other senior goalkeeper in the Liverpool squad. Loris Karius is half-way through a two-year loan at Bestikas so there might be some kind of recall clause in that deal. However the German has never seemed to have much of a future at Anfield after his infamous display against Real Madrid in the Champions League final last year. Mignolet’s exit is a surprise. The £60,000-a-week [Spotrac] shot-stopper has been a great servant for Liverpool and it will be a shame to see him go. However the fact that he is returning to Belgium to play for Club Brugge suggests that he was desperate to move on in search of first-team football. You cannot blame him for that. Good luck, Simon.
