Jose Mourinho has predicted that Liverpool and Tottenham are candidates to win the Premier League title this season.

Liverpool beat Spurs in the Champions League final last term while the Reds also achieved a record total of points for a second-place team in the Premier League.

And while ex-Real Madrid boss Mourinho reckons that they could both win the 2019/20 title, he finds it hard to see past Manchester City as he named Pep Guardiola’s B team more likely to finish top than Arsenal, Manchester United and Chelsea.

“Four: Man City, Tottenham, Liverpool and Man City’s B team,” Mourinho told Sky Sports when asked to predict who will contend for the Premier League title.

“When I look at the images of the bench yesterday [when champions Manchester City won 5-0 at West Ham] and even some of the players who were not involved, they could fight for the title.

“Independent of what happens today, even if one of the team plays magnificently and has a fantastic result, I don’t believe they are going to be in the title race.

“And it is also difficult for me, despite them having some good players, to see Arsenal in a title race. But I think Tottenham has to join it.”

OPINION

Man City are favourites to win the title again for a reason – they are the best. Liverpool pushed them very hard last season but just fell short in the end. Jurgen Klopp’s men have to be seen as the most likely team to challenge City for the title because of what happened last term when the Reds finished second and won a sixth European title. Tottenham are a good team and are perhaps the third-best in the league at the moment but they are not going to be anywhere near Liverpool or Man City, who will be in a league of their own this season. It’s already been made clear that these are two teams who are miles better than the rest. Liverpool won 4-1 against Norwich on Friday without being at full strength and having taken the foot off the gas in the second half. Man City battered West Ham 5-0 at the London Stadium on Saturday in what will no doubt be one of the biggest away wins the league will see this term.
