Chris Sutton and Paul Ince clashed over whether Manchester United are copying Liverpool as Sutton appeared to completely disagree with the idea that Man United were in anyway replicating their Premier League rivals.

Robbie Savage asked the pair, as well as Peter Crouch, on BT Sport’s Early Kick-Off, as seen in a clip on the broadcaster’s Twitter account, if Man United were replicating Liverpool and the duo instantly revealed they had differing opinions.

“In what way?” said Sutton.

“The fact is, they’ve signed a centre-half,” replied Ince.

Sutton: “They’ve signed a player?”

“I’m talking, he asked me the question not you,” Ince quickly replied.

“They’ve got the three small attackers up front, they’re going down that road.

“They let Lukaku go to Inter Milan…”

Sutton interrupted Ince to question what they had to do with Liverpool and the former Liverpool midfielder told Sutton that he “had his bit” just a minute ago, before continuing to explain what he thought.

“So yes,” said Ince before pointing out he has played for both teams so he can answer that question.

Sutton can be heard in the background telling Ince that he is “digging” a “big” hole before questioning the former Reds player’s verdict further.

“They’ve signed a player? How? They’ve signed a centre-half,” said an amused Sutton.

“They’re copying everybody! They’ve signed a player, that’s football.”

Ince continued trying to explain his opinion by highlighting that Man United got rid of Romelu Lukaku in order to go with Jesse Lingard and Marcus Rashford, and this just left Sutton noticeably laughing.

OPINION

Ince really believes that Man United are trying to follow Liverpool’s example, as he previously went on the record to say that Man United were copying Jurgen Klopp’s side. The retired midfielder stated mere days ago in a column for Paddy Power, that Man United signing Harry Maguire was like when Liverpool signed Virgil Van Dijk, before saying that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer let Lukaku go as he wasn’t a pacey forward. Ince seemed to suggest that the Man United manager wanted a front three in a similar mould to Liverpool’s current front three, Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane. While it would be nice to imagine that Man United have fallen so far into Liverpool’s shadow that they’re now copying them, it’s hard not to agree with Sutton rather than Ince on this matter. After all, Man United needed a new centre-back regardless of whether Liverpool had seen their fortunes recently transformed by signing a formidable one of their own, and Liverpool’s front three aren’t unique, there are tons of top European sides that favour quick attackers capable of being dangerous on the counter-attack. You just feel Ince has read too much into Man United’s dealings on this occasion.
