Liverpool will look to add to their squad next summer, and their preferred targets will be “more readily available”, according to The Athletic journalist James Pearce.

The Reds failed to bring in any senior outfield players during the most recent transfer window, but Pearce has suggested that the club’s inactivity was deliberate.

Writing during a Q&A for his outlet, he said: “Liverpool always plan two to three transfer windows in advance.

“This summer was always going to be quiet – Klopp said as much back in April.

“There’s a feeling that the squad will need more work done next summer and that targets will be more readily available then.”

OPINION

At this stage, Liverpool fans just have to trust in Jurgen Klopp. The German has overseen a steady period of improvement during his time on Merseyside, and there is nothing to suggest that he can’t keep that positive trajectory going if he is given enough time and faith to carry out his plans. This summer was disappointing, yes, but the fact that it was a deliberate choice should soften the blow a little. Add to that the fact that the likes of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Rhian Brewster have returned from injury, and even though they haven’t made any real signings, the Reds, on paper at least, look stronger than they did this time last season. The Ox could be the biggest boost, and if he can get back to being the player Liverpool thought they were signing before his injury, who completed 5.7 dribbles and registered 1.7 key passes per game for Arsenal in 2017/18, as per Whoscored, he could be a revelation.
