Pearce: Klopp unlikely to spend in January

Jurgen Klopp is unlikely to sign players in January this season unless one of his front three pick up an injury, according to The Athletic journalist James Pearce.

The German failed to bring in any senior outfield options for his Liverpool squad this summer, but Pearce is of the opinion that only a serious knock to Roberto Firmino, Mo Salah, or Sadio Mane could tempt him to spend in winter.

Writing on a Q&A for the Athletic, he said: “Klopp doesn’t tend to use the winter window much.

“I know that’s when he signed Van Dijk but that was more to do with the deal falling through the previous summer.

“Klopp sees this squad as the one he’s got for the full season.

“What could change that is if injuries to any of the front three leave a big hole. It feels like a lot hinges this season on the ability of players like Origi, Shaqiri and Brewster to step up and deliver when required.”

OPINION

Whether this is a good idea or not will only really become clear as we approach the January window. If Liverpool are nine points clear at Christmas then sure, don’t spend a penny. If things are a little tighter at the top, however, or if Manchester City begin to open up a gap, then the wisdom of Klopp’s frugality may be called into question. Pearce is right insofar that the Reds would be in a lot of trouble if they lost one of their front three. Already this season, the important of that Mane, Salah, Firmino triumvirate has been made very clear. Against Chelsea in Istanbul on Wednesday night, the whole game seemed to hinge on Roberto Firmino entering the fray, and similarly, when he started against Norwich City last Friday, he was superb. Four shots, four successful dribbles, and an assist, as per Whoscored, the Brazilian was unplayable, as were his two wide teammates. If you take those talents out of the equation, Liverpool suddenly look a whole lot weaker.
