It is “highly unlikely” that Liverpool will sign any more players before the transfer window closes, according to journalist James Pearce.

The Reds are yet to make a a senior outfield acquisition this summer, with the deadline due to pass at 5pm on Thursday.

And Pearce has suggested that the chances of any more incoming business are slim.

Writing on a transfer blog for The Athletic, he said: “I’m told it’s ‘highly unlikely’ that there will be any more incomings at LFC before the deadline.”

OPINION

This is just about the last thing that Liverpool fans will have wanted to hear, but honestly they must have known in their heart of hearts that this could happen. The Reds have been very, very reluctant to make any kind of move in the transfer market, and other than some impressive youth signings, and a necessary capture in the form of Adrian as a back-up goalkeeper, Jurgen Klopp has barely even seemed interested in dipping his toe in the choppy waters of the market. To be fair to him, you can kind of see why. He has several senior players returning to the fold after significant injury lay-offs, and those players will certainly feel like new signings. Taking Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain as an example, the midfielder was in fine form prior to the horrendous ligament injury that ruled him out for much of last season. Now, however, if he can get back to the player who was registering a pass completion rate of 82.6% and 1.4 shots on goal per game [Whoscored], as he was before his stint in the treatment room, he could be a real powerhouse for the Kop this term. If he is, it will really soften the blow of a quiet window.
