Liverpool-mad hockey star turned television personality Samantha Quek has made a Gary Lineker-esque wager regarding Reds centre half Virgil van Dijk.

The Match of the Day presenter famously followed through on his vow to present the show in his underpants if Leicester City won the Premier League title in 2015/16.

Quek has now done the same thing after a journalist suggested that a potential Harry Maguire-Victor Lindelof centre back partnership at Old Trafford was superior to Van Dijk and whoever plays alongside him at Liverpool.

I’m confident enough to say I’ll present Match of the Day in my underpants if Maguire and Lindelof concede fewer goals than Van Dijk + ANY other he lines up along side this season… #NotGonnaHappen,” she wrote on her personal Twitter account.

OPINION

The BBC reported on Friday that United have agreed an £80million deal with Leicester City centre half Harry Maguire, and the England international is widely expected to be announced as a Red Devils player in short order. That instantly elevates the level of the team’s central defensive unit, but Quek has every right to be as bullish as she is here. Liverpool conceded the fewest number of goals in the Premier League with just 22 let in in 38 games, while United floundered by allowing 54 through their midst. Those numbers say it all, really. Even with Maguire on board, it’s unlikely that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side will suddenly become as stingy defensively as Jurgen Klopp’s team, because they don’t have the same level of quality all along the backline. Plus, the suggestion that Lindelof is suddenly a superior player to Joel Matip or – and especially – Joe Gomez, is ludicrous to say the least. Even if we’re saying he is, Van Dijk’s greatness still elevates the Reds’ centre back partnership above that of their fierce rivals.
