Jamie Redknapp sent a message to Liverpool midfielder James Milner after the 2-1 win against Southampton on Saturday.

Milner ended up receiving stitches after he clashed heads with Southampton’s James Ward-Prowse on the 16th-minute mark and played the majority of Saturday’s game all bandaged up.

The 33-year-old shared a picture of his stitches on Sunday morning, via his personal Instagram, and ended up being sent a three-word message by Redknapp, as the former Liverpool midfielder compared him to Terry Butcher.

“Big terry butcher !” wrote Redknapp on his verified Instagram account.

OPINION

Redknapp calling Milner “big Terry Butcher” was clearly a reference to when Butcher famously was bandaged up, when his head was dripping with blood when playing for England against Sweden in 1989. It’s hard not to think of Butcher when you see a player with their head bandaged up, as that image of the retired defender is iconic, to say the least. However, aside from Milner needing stitches against Southampton, it’s worth noting the midfielder put in a solid performance on Saturday. The 33-year-old racked up one assist and averaged a rating of 6.73, as per WhoScored, across the 74 minutes he played. Milner may not be the most headline-grabbing member of Jurgen Klopp’s squad, but it’s fair to say he plays his part well. The 33-year-old started 19 league games for the Reds last season, scoring five goals and four assists across all his league appearances in the process, and is no doubt aiming to feature even more this season in order to help Klopp’s side go one better and win the Premier League title.
