Liverpool legend Ian Rush has taken to Instagram to praise current Kop star Roberto Firmino.

The Brazilian played his part in a 4-1 opening night demolition of newly-promoted Norwich City, providing an assist and going close to scoring himself on more than one occasion.

And Anfield legend Rush, who himself scored 346 times for the Reds, was suitably impressed by his performance.

Commenting on a post to Firmino’s official Instagram account, he said: “Quality today”.

OPINION

If Ian Rush feels the need to praise your performance, then you must be doing something right. Liverpool were positively rampant last night against the shellshocked Canaries, and as is so often the case, Firmino seemed to be at the heart of it all. That role he occupies – not quite a traditional centre-forward, more than a false nine – makes him so hard to track, and when he is on song, it can be like trying to catch smoke. Against Norwich, the Brazilian registered four shots on target, four successful dribbles, one key pass, and even managed to win one aerial duel as well, as per Whoscored. He was everywhere, and his Whoscored rating of 8.6 was more than justified. In fact, the only thing lacking form his display was a goal. If he keeps on playing like this, that will change very, very soon. Expect another stellar season from the grinning South American.
