Shearer slams Adrian

Alan Shearer has slammed Liverpool goalkeeper Adrian for his performance against Southampton, claiming that the stopper made a “poor mistake” against the Saints.

The veteran Spaniard was at fault for the Danny Ings’ goal in the Reds’ 2-1 win on the south coast, scuffing a clearance after a simple Virgil Van Dijk back pass.

And Shearer was quick to lay the blame at the 32-year-old’s door.

Speaking on Match of the Day, as quoted by the Daily Mail, he said: “Tiredness without doubt was there. But they have looked pretty dodgy defensively,

“Ings closing him [Adrian] down, in the back of the net, poor mistake”.

OPINION

At the end of the day, Jurgen Klopp will be looking to sweep this one under the carpet as soon as possible. The Reds still managed to win, and that will be the most important thing to the manager after a gruelling midweek trip to Istanbul. But Shearer is right. Adrian was at fault for the goal, and Liverpool did look quite shaky at the back. Something has to be done about both of those things. Individual goalkeeping errors do happen, unfortunately, but given the heightened scrutiny surrounding Adrian following Alisson Becker’s injury, the last thing the Spaniard needs is to be dropping clangers. Hopefully he can come back stringer next week, because having him in a bad place mentally is just about the worst thing that could happen to a Liverpool side that are looking uncharacteristically frail at the moment.
