Virgil Van Dijk is set to double his wages at Liverpool after earning a new contract, according to 90min.com.

The 6’4″ Dutchman [Transfermarkt] joined the Reds from Southampton back in January 2018, and has since gone on to establish himself as one of the finest central defenders in the world, helping Jurgen Klopp’s men to a Champions League title last season.

The report suggests that the 28-year-old has secured himself a new mega-deal worth up to £250,000-a-week.

OPINION

If this is true then it is huge. Van Dijk has been one of the finest defenders in the world for some time now, and a contract like this would not only cement his status, but also ward off any potential moves from other supergiants of the European game. Much has been made of Van Dijk’s form since his arrival from Southampton, and rightly so. Last year he averaged 5.2 clearances per match, as well as a pass completion rate of 89.7%, as per Whoscored. The year he has started in a similar vein, averaging 3.5 interceptions per match, three clearances, and a pass completion of 86.3%. He is a Rolls Royce of a player, and in the current market, he is deserving of the hike in his wages. More to the point, if it means that he keeps on pulling on that red shirt every week, the Kop won’t care how much he is being paid.
