Steve McManaman has slammed Liverpool goalkeeper Adrian for his “ridiculous” error in the 2-1 win against Southampton at St Mary’s on Saturday afternoon.

The Reds were cruising to a straightforward victory but a rush of blood to the head in the final stages saw Adrian basically hand Danny Ings a goal when he passed the ball straight to him.

The former West Ham goalkeeper was the penalty shootout hero on Wednesday night in the Super Cup victory against Chelsea.

However his mistake cost Liverpool a clean sheet and could have cost them a win against Southampton this weekend, and McManaman has warned the Spanish ‘keeper that he cannot repeat that error.

“From the sublime during the week to the ridiculous today,” McManaman told Premier League Productions, as quoted by the Express.

“To a certain extent you’re saying exactly the same thing when it happened to Alisson.

“That is your warning, that does not happen again.

“Eighty-first, 82nd minute, just kick it as far as you can to the end of the pitch.

“You don’t want to be messing around when you’re 2-0 up and you’re cruising to a victory after the week they’ve had.

“And that might be the warning sign that he will not do that ever again in a Liverpool shirt.”

OPINION

Liverpool will have to make do with Adrian over the coming weeks until Alisson Becker returns from his injury and while the Spaniard is a goalkeeper who is experienced in the Premier League, he is still someone who was only second-choice at West Ham last season. Adrian is an error-prone goalkeeper. He is a very good shot-stopper but with the ball at his feet, he can become a bit of a liability. Even on Wednesday night, when he saved a penalty in the shoot-out to earn the victory, his distribution throughout the game was a worry for some supporters on Twitter. Adrian’s not going to improve now. He has been like this all through his career and a few weeks of playing as Liverpool’s number one is hardly going to change that. McManaman is saying this as a passionate Liverpool fan but does he think that there is some switch that Adrian can flick to ensure he doesn’t do that again?
