Adrian has revealed that Pepe Reina advised him to join Liverpool after he was offered the chance this summer.

The former West Ham keeper admitted that he asked his Spanish compatriot about the Reds before sealing a move to Anfield, with the Liverpool fan favourite reassuring him it was the right move.

Adrian spoke glowingly of Reina in an interview with AS, claiming that the experienced keeper sold Liverpool as a great city which was more supportive of football than fans are in London.

“With the most, Pepe Reina, with whom I have a lot of confidence and assured me that I would enjoy very much,” he admitted.

“Obviously, it is a city different from London, smaller, more welcoming and soccer. He told me that he was coming to a great club, that he was going to have a great time.”

The 32-year-old was thrown straight into the action after first-choice keeper Alisson Becker picked up an injury in the Reds’ Premier League opener against Norwich.

OPINION

For a Spanish keeper who has attracted interest from Liverpool, there is no better person to seek advice from than Reina. The former Reds’ hero enjoyed many great years at Anfield and is the only stopper to keep 20 or more clean sheets in a single Premier League season on two separate occasions. Adrian is yet to keep a clean sheet in his three outings under Jurgen Klopp, who was clearly impressed by his new signing after his penalty heroics delivered the UEFA Super Cup to Merseyside. That was followed by the contrasting performance away at Southampton on Saturday, where Adrian made numerous saves to keep his side in the game but was ultimately nearly the reason they could have drawn after his mistake led to a consolation goal for the Saints. The Spaniard has managed to somewhat plug the hole left by Alisson, averaging 23.5 passes per game with only 3.5 of those being long balls as he looks to adapt to Klopp’s possession-based style [WhoScored].
