OPINION
Liverpool produced a frustrating first half performance against Burnley at Turf Moor on Saturday, and there weren’t many Reds players more culpable than midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum. The Dutchman is sometimes criticised for being too passive in possession, too content to take the easy sideways pass over the more difficult forward one. That’s not always true and often that criticism is undeserved, but on this occasion you have to say that it was valid. Wijnaldum simply didn’t seem to want to take many chances, just playing it safe and struggling to find the creativity necessary to break down a stubborn Burnley side. When Jurgen Klopp’s team did go in front it was due to a huge slice of luck as Trent Alexander-Arnold’s cross took a huge deflection and looped over Clarets ‘keeper Nick Pope. Without that, though, there probably would have been many more people focusing on the lack of creativity provided by Wijnaldum and co. in the Liverpool midfield.
