OPINION
It always seemed likely that Liverpool attacker Divock Origi would get the start against Norwich City in the Reds’ Premier League opener at Anfield on Friday night, and so it proved. Nominal starter Sadio Mane only returned to training last Monday after a run to the African Cup of Nations final with Senegal. Origi is the man to fill in whenever any of Liverpool’s fearsome front three can’t start, and he did a terrific job filling in for Mane in the first half against the Canaries. It was the Belgian international who got Jurgen Klopp’s team up and running, driving down the left flank, entering the penalty area and driving in a fierce cross which Norwich captain Grant Hanley could only slice into his own net. The floodgates opened after that, but it was Origi’s intervention that started the team’s run of goals – and he bagged a second just before half time, as well. It’s such a bonus to have a quality deputy like Origi who can come in and replace a world class player like Mane and do a phenomenal job, and that’s what he did in the first half, here.
