OPINION

At long, long last it feel as if Jordan Henderson is getting some of the love that he justly deserves at Liverpool. The Kop skipper was always going to have a mountain to climb when he took the captain’s armband from Steven Gerrard upon the legendary number eight’s retirement, and there have been times when it has felt as if the weight of having his name associated with such special players has hung heavy on him. There has never been any doubt about his passion or effort levels, however, and now that he has a Champions League winner’s medal, there is perhaps a slight change in perception around him on Merseyside. And his first half performance against Arsenal on Saturday was certainly enough to justify that. Stroking the ball around the centre of the park with authority and poise, he looked every inch the Liverpool captain. Prior to Saturday’s match he had averaged a pass completion rate of 81% from his 91 minutes of Premier League football, as per Whoscored, and if he can keep that kind of form going throughout the season then he will continue to be a very important member of Jurgen Klopp’s side. He may not be the most glamorous player, but he does everything well, and in a team of dazzlers, somebody of his ilk is needed.
