OPINION

There are several ways to measure the size of a club. Traditionally, people would have looked at the number of trophies won, or perhaps the average size of an average home attendance to determine how large a side were, but now, in our image-obsessed, technologically ferocious society, there are more ways than ever before to decide if a team is truly big or not. Whether it’s social media followers or kit sales, now teams can look beyond the confines of the pitch and the stadium to see their reach as global brands as much as sporting entities. And that is certainly the case with Liverpool at the moment. According to a report from Love The Sales, the Reds have the most popular replica shirt in the English game, with demand almost doubling form last season. And it doesn’t stop there, according to the piece, Liverpool’s goalkeeper shirt this season, a classy black and gold effort that has many people drooling, is so popular that it is more highly sough after than the actual home shirts of sizeable clubs like Newcastle United, West Ham, and bitter rivals Everton. On the basis of this, it’s fair to say that New Balance have knocked it out of the park with this one.
