OPINION

There aren’t many academies that are doing as good a job as Liverpool’s is right now. The Reds seem to have a plethora of bright young things in their ranks, and it’s been proven on several occasions that if Jurgen Klopp thinks you’re good enough, then it doesn’t matter how old you are. After Saturday’s U18s clash with Stoke City, there might just be another name to add to that list of emerging superstars. Layton Stewart struck later against the Potters to ensure a 3-2 win, and what a goal it was too. With time almost up, and with the pressure of a home debut resting on his shoulders, the 16-year-old lifted one over the keeper and wrapped up all three points. That takes his tally for the season to three in four matches, plus an assist, and if he keeps going at this rate, it’s surely only a matter of time before he starts catching the attention of the U23s. He may be young, but midfielders who can find the back of the net will never go out of fashion, and the youngster couldn’t have asked for a better start to life with the U18s. He’s still got a long way to go, but this could be the first step on a very exciting road.
