OPINION
Liverpool fans were left feeling more than a little aggrieved over the summer when their club failed to sign any senior outfield players. After a stellar campaign last term, it was the opinion of Jurgen Klopp that his side did not need any significant reinforcements, and even as his peers reached into their pockets and flashed the cash, the German stood firm and insisted on flashing nothing more than his trademark grin. Part of his logic behind refusing to bring in any new blood was his belief that there were several players in his arsenal who had for one reason or another not been able to show their full potential last season, and who would, therefore, be like new signings this time around. One such player was Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. The midfielder missed a large part of last season with a ligament injury picked up in the 2018 Champions League semi-final against Roma. Now, however, he is back to full fitness, and has been duly rewarded with a new long term contract, as confirmed by the club via their official Twitter on Thursday evening. And that is fantastic news. The Ox hasn’t quite managed to hit the heights of his full potential consistently in a red shirt yet, but if he can get a good run of games under his belt, there is no reason why he cannot get back to the kind of form that saw him register 5.7 successful dribbles and 1.7 key passes per match for Arsenal at the beginning of the 2017/18 Premier League season, as per Whoscored. Now is his time to shine.
