OPINION
Virgil Van Dijk is an absolute Rolls-Royce of a defender. The Dutchman is constantly performing at a superlative level for Liverpool, and he has almost single-handedly transformed their defence into one of the of the most relabel and airtight backlines in Europe. Van Dijk has averaged 3.5 interceptions, 1.5 tackles, 1.5 blocks, and three clearances per game already this season, as per Whoscored, but his play is about a lot more than just shutting out the opposition. And if that was in doubt, it certainly shouldn’t be after his latest little flash of brilliance. During the 2-1 win over Southampton on Saturday, with a long ball dropping over his shoulder and Nathan Redmond chasing him down, the Dutchman, calm as can be, let’s it fall from the sky and nonchalantly flicks it back over his head with the outside of his boot. It was a ridiculous moment of composure and quality, and a timely reminder, as if one was needed, of just how good he is. There has been tentative talk of a potential Ballon d’Or this year, and you would have to say that Van Dijk deserves to be in the running at least. If he keeps pulling out moments of magic like this one, he might even win it.
