Schalke manager David Wagner has claimed that Jurgen Klopp has already cemented his place as a Liverpool legend.

The fellow German admitted that Klopp is more than capable of competing with Manchester City and Pep Guardiola and that he knows the Reds will be fighting for all possible silverware this season.

Speaking in an interview with talkSPORT on Thursday, Wagner highlighted Klopp’s status at Anfield and replied to Jim White who asked whether or not he is a club legend.

“Yeah I think so and he absolutely deserves it,” he said. “What he has done for the club in this period is amazing and it’s interesting what will be around the corner in the future for them.”

“I think he showed last season that he’s able to compete with Pep Guardiola and fight with his team for the title, so hopefully he can do it this season as well. They have a great group together.”

Klopp arrived in Merseyside in 2015 and recently won his second piece of silverware at the club, adding the Super Cup to last season’s Champions League triumph.

OPINION

Even though Wagner is one of Klopp’s best friends within football and is bound to be preferential towards him, it is hard to disagree with the German on this one. Since arriving from Borussia Dortmund, there has been an air of expectation around Liverpool from their own fans and around the country. His personality has been transmitted on to his squad and there is a sense of harmony that appears different to any other club in England, let alone the Premier League. The German comes across as a somewhat father-figure to his players, and they have certainly repaid that trust in the past couple of seasons. The unity of his squad nearly delivered the club’s first-ever Premier League title last season, and they were bitterly unlucky to miss out having only lost once and won 97 points. It is definitely hard to say that Wagner isn’t right about this one, but if there were any doubters, they would surely disappear should Klopp be able to deliver that first ever Premier League trophy to Anfield.
