Liverpool right back Trent Alexander-Arnold has revealed that he is constantly watching two former Champions League-winning stars to improve his game.

The England international named retired Bayern Munich legend Philipp Lahm and South American-based Sao Paolo stalwart Dani Alves as his two positional inspirations.

“When I was studying full-backs it was always Philipp Lahm and Dani Alves,” he told the Daily Mail. “For me, it’s Alves. He’s a really attacking aggressive player, solid in his defensive duties but really good attacking-wise, almost like a winger, makes things happen.

“Our analysts would clip together Alves’s best work of the season for me to study. Positional stuff, decision-making, runs. I focused more on Lahm defensively and Alves in the attacking sense.”

OPINION

If you’re thinking of two right backs to watch and improve from over the past fifteen years of European football, there’s no better duo than Alves and Lahm. These two have been the gold standard at the position, with the latter eventually transitioning to a deep-lying central midfield role towards the back end of his career. However, for the majority of his playing time the German was a truly world-class right back. Alves has undoubtedly been the best attacking right back of his generation, and played a key part in the Barcelona team under Pep Guardiola that is widely considered to be the greatest club side of all time. His game is very similar to Alexander-Arnold’s. They are both attack-first right backs who contribute massively from an offensive point of view, but do just enough defensively and use their pace to get the job done. Alves has been a serial trophy-winner, and the Liverpool ace can only dream of securing as much silverware as he has over his career. Still, these two aren’t bad role models for a young right back.
