Liverpool’s injured double act Alisson and Naby Keita were placed on ‘specially-designed training regimes’ over the international break, according to journalist Paul Gorst.

The Reds correspondent revealed the news on a Liverpool Echo Q & A [19/09; 12:53], claiming that both men have been given their own tailored regimens to aid their recovery from injury.

However, Gorst also provided a rather pessimistic update on the duo’s status, stating that the Brazilian continues to be sidelined with a calf injury, while he’s not optimistic that Keita will make the match day squad for Sunday’s clash with Chelsea.

Having said that, Klopp is expected to give his own insight into the Guinean’s status at his pre match press conference on Friday.

OPINION

The Reds fans are no doubt hungry for any scrap of news on the recovery and return dates of these two players, particularly their number one Alisson. However, it doesn’t look like any return is particularly imminent for either man. Keita sounds like the closer party, but even then Gorst would consider it a surprise if he even made the substitute’s bench against Chelsea. Alisson is widely expected to be out for another month or so, which is rather dispiriting. However, the pair are both on their own training regimes now, so perhaps that will speed up their recoveries. Ultimately, you simply want them to find their way back to full fitness and then remain on the pitch. However long that takes is secondary. Still, the sooner the better from a competitive point of view. The return of Keita will be a positive one, with the former RB Leipzig man showing flashes of brilliance before going down at the start of May. Hopefully that will occur in the next couple of weeks.
