Rafa Benitez has given his opinion on Steven Gerrard one day replacing Jurgen Klopp as Liverpool manager.

The current Anfield boss suggested earlier in the week that the legendary Reds’ captain could be the ideal man to take his place in the dugout when he calls it a day on Merseyside, as per Four Four Two.

And Benitez has given his own view on the situation.

Writing in a Q&A for The Athletic, when asked if Gerrard could continue Klopp’s legacy, he said: “I think he has the potential to be a good manager.

“As he said in one interview, he was lucky enough to have different managers and from different countries, which is always good for your development.

“I think he can be a great manager, he is already doing well, but only time will say how good he will be.”

OPINION

All the early signs are that Gerrard has what it takes to be Liverpool manager one day. The fact that Klopp himself is endorsing him is a pretty good start, and that, coupled with how dearly he is love at Anfield, would make him a popular successor on Merseyside. His record with Rangers, themselves a huge club, is impressive enough, and his rate of 2.03 points per game, as per Transfermarkt, is nothing to be sniffed at. If he could win a trophy or two while he was at Ibrox, his credentials would sky rocket, and that in turn would enhance his chances of landing the Kop job no end. Just as impressive, however, has been his work with young talent. The manner in which he brought on Ryan Kent during his loan spell at Ibrox last season, to the point that he won the Scottish PFA’s Young Player of the Year, shows that Gerrard is capable of keeping one eye on the future, and the hope will be that were he ever to get the job at Liverpool, he could continue their fine tradition of blooding young talent.
