Rhian Brewster sent ex-Liverpool attacker Danny Ings a message after he scored twice in Southampton’s 4-0 win over Portsmouth in the EFL Cup on Tuesday.

The Liverpool youngster took to his Instagram stories to send a three-word message to the Saints forward along with a clip of him opening the scoring in order to show his support.

“The big man,” wrote Brewster via his personal Instagram story.

Ings left Liverpool to join Southampton on a permanent basis in the summer transfer window after spending the 2018/19 campaign on loan with the Saints.

OPINION

Ings hadn’t set the world alight for Southampton this season ahead of scoring a brace against Portsmouth and hopefully scoring against the club’s archrivals will give him the boost needed to kick on this season. After all, from a Liverpool fan’s perspective, it would be nice to see Ings excel as in hindsight it was a shame that it never really worked out for him at Anfield. The 27-year-old managed only 25 appearances for the Reds, scoring four goals in the process, due to injuries overshadowing his stint at the club. Ings suffered two separate knee injuries during his time at Anfield with both keeping him on the sidelines for over 200 days each (Source: Transfermarkt). As for Brewster, it’s nice to see him supporting a former Liverpool striker and hopefully watching Ings wow on Tuesday night, is the extra inspiration he needs ahead of the EFL Cup clash with MK Dons. Liverpool Echo journalist Paul Gorst in a Q&A for the paper’s online edition reported that Brewster was expected to make his long-awaited debut against the Dons.
