TalkSPORT host Jason Cundy has laughed off suggestions from an Everton fan that Andy Robertson is “not even the best left-back on Merseyside”.

The Liverpool defender endured a torrid evening in Italy on Tuesday, conceding the penalty for Napoli’s opener in the Reds’ 2-0 Champions League defeat.

Following that match, Everton fan Steve rang into Cundy’s show with Andy Goldstein on talkSPORT and argued that Robertson was overrated.

He said: “He’s been found out a little bit now.

“He’s not the best left-back in the world, he’s not even the best left-back on Merseyside.”

In response, Cundy simply burst out laughing at the claim.

OPINION

It’s true that Robertson hasn’t been at his best in recent weeks, but everybody goes through rocky patches, and to suggest that he has been found out off the back of one penalty conceded in the Champions League and a couple of patchy performances in a pretty average Scotland side seems excessively harsh. So far this term, this past handful of games aside, Robertson has been fairly exceptional for Liverpool, and has outstripped Everton’s left-back Lucas Digne in interceptions, offsides won for his team, and blocks made per game, as per Whoscored. To be fair to the Frenchman, he has made more tackles, clearances, and been dribbled past fewer times, but crucially, Robertson has registered a Whoscored rating of 7.2 compared to Digne’s 6.99. The gap between the two players may not be as large as people make out sometimes, but certainly, Robertson still has the edge.
